Many businesses (food, medical etc.) use a GS1-128 barcode (or more recently a GS1-QR) that contains relevant package info, including things like batch, expiry date, SSCC number of the package, quantity contained in the package and GTIN of the internal unit. It would be really beneficial to be able to scan the GS1-128 code and have the app extract the data to (a) confirm you have the right package, (b) record the relevant data associated with the package for further processing like sending back to an EPR system and (c) using the SSCC to ensure the same package isn't scanned twice. The app could address a number of data collection issues if it could scan the code (either the QR or the GS1-128). This system is coming to all medical devices in the form of a mandated UDI code. If a business deals with grocery or hardware (Bunnings, Kmart etc.) it's pretty much mandatory to record all of this and send the data back, sometimes at the pallet level (i.e. scan boxes onto a pallet, and then have a record of what SSCC's were on a given pallet).
